Writing 2203 Home Study

Dear Writing 2206 students,

I think back to January when talks surrounded the novel Corona virus. Little did we know then that our world would have been impacted so greatly and the upheaval that has occurred as a result.
I miss you all. I miss our discussions. I miss our writing warm-ups. I miss your enthusiasm as you've excitedly shared updates regarding your publication booklets.

During this time, I encourage you to share any unfinished works. I'll post a list as soon as I have access to my classroom.

Also, keep up on the news. If you happen to read or see something, please share via email and tell me about it. I can be reached at margaretpittman@nlesd.ca

At this stage of the school closure, I am no longer certain what day in the schedule it is.:( Again, as I posted on the main page, I was waiting for further direction from my administrators and the Board before uploading additional things here. It was important to know how this directed learning is to unfold.

I encourage you to continue watching the news, read editorials, read articles, and write for fun. Also, if you haven't accepted my invitation to Google Classroom, please do so.

I have a list of your school emails if you need it.

Within the week of "returning" from Easter Break, I will be sharing additional ideas and ways for you to keep writing for fun. To write well for a variety of audiences is such and important life skill.

Be safe! Wash your hands.

Easter Break (Thursday, April 9 - Sunday, April 19)

Monday, April 27, 2020

I hope you have all been taking the time to write something and that things are going well. I miss all of you and our daily interactions in the classroom. I hit the ground running with my return from Easter Break by making some revisions to my report card comments as well as creating individualized learning plans for my at-risk students.

A  number of you have reached out to me regarding updating your term three portfolios that were cut short due to the school suspension. I will be reaching out with the names of assessments. If anybody else would like to receive a list, please reach out to me.

For the next week, considering writing a short story about life in a post-pandemic world according to the following timelines: 3 months, 6 months, a year, and 5 years. The temporal references could be used as subheadings. It can be fiction or non-fiction.

If you are completing these writing tasks, I'd love to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to reach out. Take care.

This week, you are encouraged to consider the following writing prompt.

Grade 11 students: Imagine you were a member of the class of 2020 and have faced the realization that school trips were lost as well as the end of many activities before the seasons could officially end or begin. Write a reflective piece on how you would feel. Then, pen a general letter to the Class of 2020 as a sign of support. With your permission, I will compile them and share snippets on the grad page.

Grade 12 students: being a member of the class of 2020 have been met with heartbreak these past weeks as well as hope for the future. Pen a general letter to the class of 2021 outlining what they should try to look forward to during their graduation year.

School has been suspended for a number of weeks. Daily routines as we know them have been disrupted. Many, however, have started to adjust to a new normal – whatever that is!

Write a descriptive piece in which you detail your ideal day under the restrictions of Covid-19.

This would be the time of the school year when we'd be kicking it into high gear to get the publication booklets finished. It breaks my heart that we never got to see the booklets through. However, it is my hope that you've all engaged with writing in some way, shape, or form since the school suspension has been on.

This marks the final week of on-line-learning. This week, please finish the one week story challenge. As I have written before, if you are completing these writing tasks, I'd love to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to reach out. Take care.
