English 3202 Home Study

Dear 3202 students,
We're at a bit of a standstill here as we just started the Drama unit in English 3202. No books were sent home as the plays will be taken from a number of different resources.

Last week, my English department colleagues and I decided that all Practical English courses at Menihek from grades 10 - 12 will work on Personal Response Writing. You are encouraged too to read something daily - anything - for informative purposes or for enjoyment.

You're missed and I look forward to getting back to our routines soon.

PLEASE NOTE: I am taking this suspension of school on a day to day basis. Things are changing daily. If you owe me anything Monster or Of Mice and Men related, be sure to get ALL overdue work in sooner than later. There are a number of you who owe me work.

The following link will bring you to a "New York Times" resource with 650 thought provoking and relevant personal response topics. Click HERE to access them. Write freely about one of them and share it with me via email or google docs. Please make sure you make note of the topic.

As a quick recap of personal response writing, your response should have a minimum of three paragraphs.  Personal pronouns are permitted.

At this stage of the school closure, I am no longer certain what day in the schedule it is.:( Again, as I posted on the main page, I was waiting for further direction from my administrators and the Board before uploading additional things here. It was important to know how this directed learning is to unfold.

I encourage you to get in all overdue work to me no later than Friday, May 1.

Within the week of "returning" from Easter Break, I will be sharing a link to the play that I would have loved to have read in class. You are strongly encouraged to read it when it becomes available.

Be safe! Wash your hands.

Easter Break (Thursday, April 9 - Sunday, April 19)

Monday, April 27, 2020

I hope you have all been doing well. As of April 21, I sent out detailed emails with individualized learning plans to the students (as well of the parents of the students) who are either currently not meeting academic success in English 3202 or those who have an average of less than a 60%. Please check your spam folders. If you do not have access to your school email, please let me kn ow and I can provide assistance. I miss all of you and our daily interactions in the classroom. I hit the ground running with my return from Easter Break by making some revisions to my report card comments as well as creating the plans referenced.

Many thanks for those of you who have reached out with incomplete (overdue) assessments from term three. AT RISK STUDENTS: that will be your focus for this week.
Please get your work in ASAP.

Non at risk students, you can get some writing done. For this week, I'd like you to complete the following Personal Response topic:

Words of wisdom that hit home and changed your way of thinking

Again, you are to write a minimum of three paragraphs. Be sure to follow the criteria of personal response writing.

Please share your work with me. I would love to read what you have written.

If not for the school suspension, we would have been working through a unit on Drama. Initially, I'd planned to cover The Drawer Boy but am unable to find a pdf version to share.

     Dear Grads of 2020,
It was nice to see some of you on the weekend - either on zoom or in person. I've seen many beautiful pictures flood my timeline. It makes me happy to know that your day went well despite the current circumstances. I'll be back at Menihek cheering you on no matter where life takes you. May joy and success be around every turn.

At-risk students have been requested to continue working on all overdue work from term three and submit it to me as soon as possible. Time is getting short!

Tell a true story about your moment of understanding.

You are to write a minimum of three paragraphs ensuring to follow the criteria of personal response writing.

As of May 25 and according to the NLESD Director of Education Tony Stack, home-learning plans will be suspended June 5 to allow teachers time to complete their final tasks and focus on preparing for 2020-21.

May 27, 2020

If we have been in communication regarding work you need to submit, this message is for you. My employer and administrator have communicated the following information. PLEASE NOTE:

  • On-line learning ends on June 5th.

  • All work that has been assigned for at-risk students and credit recovery is due no later than Friday, June 12th.
A number of you have been working on these overdue assessments since April. It's time to get those items in.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Time is ticking!

If we were still in school, we would be working on "Destinations" the final project I had told you about some time ago. It is easily one of my favourite projects of the year.

At-risk students, PLEASE continue working on all overdue work from term three and submit it to me as soon as possible. I’m still waiting for work from a few of you. REMEMBER: on-line learning stops on June 5th. However, the June 12th deadline for the submission of work will be reinforced.

2      Non-at-risk students can get another writing piece done. For this week, you can work on the following Personal Response topic: Write about the moment when you knew you were grown up.

You are to consider the statement as a starting point and write about a memorable moment that the prompt brings to mind. Students have been reminded to write a minimum of three paragraphs ensuring to follow the criteria of personal response writing.

Please share your work with me as I would love to read what you have written.
